Chrystalized fix from Tetenal kit: had luck dissolving it?
The fix (clear solution) bottle from the Tetenal kit can form a residue on the sides if it's stored a long time. According to Tetenal this can be "easily" remedied by "warming" the bottle. The residue is now off the sides of the bottle after being warmed, but it's remaining in chunks that aren't dis...

Expired TMZ: can it be salvaged?
I understand TMZ doesn't keep long after expiration, even when refrigerated. I've got quite a few rolls that expired in 2006 that have, for what it's worth, been kept refrigerated. Can they be salvaged as a slower film? What does the deterioration consist of?

Distilled water: used in all development stages?
Should distilled water be used in all stages of development: development, wash, fix, wash? Or is it only necessary to use it in the final, wetting agent stage? I'm wondering if the necessary use of tap water for the rinses at the end would negate any benefits mixing developer or fix with distilled w...

Agfa: I thought they went out of business
Didn't Agfa go under? I'm hearing about them resuming distribution in America and note they've got a website up. Did someone buy them?

Stand development: why do people do it?
I tried stand development once when I used to push a lot of film. I used a method I'd read about in Les McClean's book "Creative Darkroom Photography" which recommended Tri-x in D-76 1:40 (!) stood in a bath for five hours. I have to think the dilution he recommends was a misprint. Needless to say t...

Developers: do they affect outcomes?
Does it matter what developer one uses to develop a negative? I'm under the impression it makes no difference what developer is used, and that people who wax on about the virtues of Rodinal, for example, are merely perpetuating a myth that one developer produces better or different results from anot...

Agitation: does it affect contrast or grain?
I'm guessing agitation does not affect grain or contrast, since the purpose of agitation is merely to remove bromide from the surface of the film so that it doesn't get between the film and the developer thereby preventing development from continuing. I am assuming developer cannot be made more aggr...

Re: Contrast vs. density: what is the difference?
I understand what you're both saying. Thank you for the responses. Ornello, people like that pushy look, though. Pushing gives an high-contrast look with little mid-tone and people think that's cool, especially when they're starting out shooting black and white film. Also, if you shoot in low light,...

Contrast vs. density: what is the difference?
Can anyone explain what the difference between contrast and density is? I know pushing increases density rather than contrast, but what does this mean?

Fuji Hunt C-41 chemicals: usable in small tanks?
I'm wondering if anyone has using Fuji Hunt replenishable C-41 developers and bleaches made for use in mini-labs. My particular question is whether these will work in a small 2 or 5 reel Patterson tank using hand agitation. I'm assuming it will. Has anyone done this? All I see on their photo chemica...

Fortepan 400 in D-76: will 1:1 dilution work?
From having looked at a chart somewhere I have it in my mind Fortepan 400 should be processed in stock D-76. My intention is to process in 1:1 to control highlights. Am I making a mistake? Digitaltruth's got a listed time of 14 minutes for 1:1 at 68F. Has anyone had any experience with it?
