Whatever happened to Crawley's FX18 ?

Whatever happened to Crawley's FX18 film developer? When it was first published and sold in tins same as Acutol S I made it up to the formula and tried it out at 1+1 and 1+3 but I never see it mentioned now. Times for 1+1 Dilution: Tri-X 35mm 10 mins RF 12 mins Phenidone 0.1gm Pan f 35mm 9 mins Hydr...

Stitching 4x5 negs?

I think he is talking about joining two exposures in photoshop from 4x5 negs. The negs would have to be scanned first. Why not use a 'compensating' developer and you would get the night scenes OK without all the digital trouble. Your technique of rating FP4+ and giving more for reciprocity failure s...

Chemicals

Thiourea and Thiocarbamide are the same thing, used in sepia toning of prints; BE CAREFUL with the POWDER as it is CARCENOGENIC. Don't inhale the powder or get it on your fingers. Toning: 1 teaspoon Pot. Ferricyanide, 1/2 teaspoon Pot. Bromide,in 1 litre water. 1/2 teaspoon Thiourea, couple of pelle...

Bulk Film Loading

I've got dozens of good cassettes waiting to be reloaded BUT I am in UK! I sit on the darkroom floor, lay out cassettes in a row (try not to knock them over in the dark!) with their sticky tape open ready, then open the bullk film tin, pull up some film, attach it to the spool tape, then wind it kee...

Query: Increase of Developer Activity

I think it's a well known fact that ID11 increases its activity on standing for a long time without being used, but I think I have the same effect with a batch of Crawley Formula FX4 I made up to the formula. A fresh FP4+ I did at 1+ 1 dilution came out over developed, then I have done an outdated (...

Developing HP5+ 400

You must find a 'professional' laboratory or the local processors will say they do only colour processing. It's really MUCH CHEAPER and EASIER to do it yourself by your home sink; you do not need a darkroom to process FILM; you can load it into the developing tank in a cupboard under the stairs in t...

Stainless Steel tanks

Pity you didn't mention this SOONER as I got rid of that tank ( I had been given) in the Brentwood Photographic club annual auction last September! If it comes up in this year's one I'll let you know! My wife keeps on to me to get rid of 'all that old rubbish in your darkroom'; I hang on to it as lo...

VC Printing

I don't bother trying to match 'grades' with filters; I just stick in about 30 Magenta to start, do a test strip, then put in more or less Magenta, usually never need any Yellow to make softer contrast, just the magenta. I use a LPL C7700 Pro for colour and some VC printing but I was also GIVEN a Du...

Developing Slide Film Etc

If you do not have much processing experience you will probably not get good results doing E6 slide processing; start on Black and White then GRADUATE to colour as I did ! The E6 chemicals are expensive and oxidise quickly in the bottles once mixed. I send my E6 slide films to dlab7.com Guernsey - v...

Push FP4

Champion 'Promicrol' is very fierce at it's recommended times but you should get 400 ASA out of the FP4 OK.

Delta 3200

I have developed several Delta 3200 films for other people and have not yet got any dense enough negatives ! I followed the Rodinal recommendation for 1+25 - result THIN ! I tried Crawley FX37 formula for his time-result THIN !

Developng Old Film

Outdated films are my speciality as I get GIVEN them or buy them CHEAP ! I find the 400 ASA emulsions lose speed much quicker than the 50 ASA, so rate the 400 at 200 definitely and develop LONGER as the contrast lowers on ageing; give at least 25% MORE development; you can print through the fog leve...

Saaaving FP4

I think you should develop for at least 50% longer time as there is the anti-halation layer you have gone through and it would cut down the light reaching the sensitive silver emulsion.

Pushing Acros 100

Year ago 'Practical Photography' Magazine here in UK published a 'pushing' process called 'FF/DD' -Fast Film Dilute Developer which I tried and got some surprising results on some films. Try the technique: dilute a standard MQ Borax Dev. such as D76 1+4 and give it 1 hour at 68oF,agitation only ever...

Eastern Block Films

For many years I used the ORWO NP22 film made in the east German Agfa factory and could get 20x16" Exhibition prints out of it. I found the best developer was PH35 Formula from a 1960's magazine in UK called '35mm photography'. I made it up myself from the chemicals. I tried the ORWO NP27 400 ASA bu...
