Clear plastic stuck on photos

I need some advice about clear plastic stuck on top of photographs in an album from 1950. The clear plastic is crinkled and yellowed. On some photos the clear plastic peels right off leaving tiny spots of sticky residue and on other photos it peels off in some areas but not others. Does anyone know of something that would remove the clear plastic or sticky residue? Would placing the photos in water help? Any advice would be appreciated!

Start with warm water and soak the prints face down for a good 15 minutes. Try to not let the temp of the water get cold. Then gently rub the surface of the print with your finger (don't use anything mechanical, you could damage the print surface) Repeat as necessary.
