The purple stain is senitizing dye(speed control). It is not a result of over fixing, it is a result of too little sodium sulfite in the fixer or not enough aggitation in the fix bath. In rapid fixer, with correct aggitation, 1 minute is plenty of time to fix properly.
Fixer will not reduce the contrast. Contrast is a function of developer time, aggitation, and exposure. Exposure being the most important to contrast.
Your lack of contrast is probably due to the fourth use of the developer.
Half grey and half purple result was incorrect fixing. Perhaps you did not dilute the fixer? Please contact me for more details.
