WARM TONE PRINT DEVELOPER

Post by Lowell Huff »

Is there any interest in a warm tone print developer?

I'm sure there is for some people Lowell, because Ilford sell a warm-tone paper developer and Adox sell what was formerly known as Agfa Neutol-WA.

I sometimes wonder how much the developer formula actually contributes to providing warmer tones rather than those warmer tones being the actual characteristic of the light sensitive emulsion itself?

I suspect the results of warm-tone developers are subtle if anything depending on the papers chosen by the photographer or darkroom technician.

Certainly the most influential aspect of tone is the "color" of the base. I have found, and it is well documented, that the type of antifog is also influential in the tone. They can be and are more than subtle.

Print developers have only a subtle effect, though adding KBr to the developer does tend to warm the tones up a bit.
