Continuing Experiments with 'FX-4'

I have been doing a lot of processing using Geoffrey Crawley's FX-4 Formula ( 1974 version ). I found it is good for outdated films. I have used it diluted 1+1 and 1+3. For ORWO NP22 dated 1993 ( 120 size) and 1992 ( 35mm size) I found for 1+1 dilution 8 minutes 15 seconds and for NP20 35mm 7 mins 45 seconds. For a batch of 01/191 dated Agfapan 25 I rated it at 20 ASA and found 12.5 mins @ 20oC for 1+3 dilution gave very good acutance and fine grain and no 'Fog Level'. I never see photos here inserted -- can i insert some results?

Out of interest, what is it you perceive that FX4 does that other developers don't? Just curious that all.

Yo Keith !! well -- I find FX-4 is good for outdated films-- it gets good shadow details, low fog level and diluted as I use it. good 'acutance' and I have fun making it up ! I know some people say that 'Three Developing Agents Metol, Hydroquinone and Phenidone' are not necessary but Good Old Geoffrey Crawley must have found something in the Formula.

Hi Pete,

Apparently, Tetenal Ulfrafin Liquid, Neofin Blue and Fotospeed FD10 also contain all three agents.

Isn't it odd that Neofin Blue contains all three agents? Or am I missing something?

I don't think you are missing anything. Some people quote the Beutler's high acutance formula as an equivalent. From the MSDS, apparently not.
